- Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014)
Set in the Arkham Games universe, this seemed like a test run of the 2016 Suicide Squad. In all honesty, this should have the Suicide Squad in the title rather than Batman. But I guess Batman is a better sell. It is fun and the different personalities mesh well together. Batman pops in periodically but it is the Harley and Deadshot show with the squad as supporting characters. This is definitely geared toward boys with all the half-naked villain girls but only one guy shirtless. This could have been better but it is hard to hate something with Harley Quinn’s insane self at the center. It is a good time all around. - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
This movie was a love letter to Chadwick Boseman. It felt like they wrote this around the real emotions they felt toward his passing. I love the fact they took a more serious approach with humor used to give you a breath. This doesn't quite have the epic grand scale of some other Marvel movies but it told the story it needed. I didn’t feel like it hit perfect scores with any of my metrics for scoring but this had a solid across-the-board outing. I loved it more than the first movie. This felt raw and real. Some of the side characters' suits look like they should be in an episode of Power Rangers. Other than that, it was great. - She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
This show is widely disliked and loved depending on who you ask. There are a lot of elements that ultimately make no sense but it is 100% a fun show. That is what I want from a Marvel show. Dramas have their place too, but fun is a necessity. Story - 16% Characters - 19% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 91% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- Son of Batman (2014)
A lower-stakes movie is refreshing after a string of JLA movies. And leave it to Batman to turn a fling into a deadly assassin child. The dynamic works since neither wants to have the father/son connection but learns to be a family regardless. It all plays like a Batman-fied dramedy. Damien is a little badass though, not gonna lie. Deathstroke is always a top-notch villain to use. He is a militarized version of Batman and has insane sword skills. This was a refreshing, grounded Batman story. Nightwing even gets to show jealousy towards his Robin replacement. This is what a solo Batman movie should be. - Justice League: War (2014)
There are a lot of similarities between this and the live-action Justice League movie. Even more so with the Snyder Cut. The League teams up for the first time to save the world from Darkseid and his parademons. It allows all the heroes to express themselves and gel in a way that contradicts and works off of each other. If the live-action movie focused on making similar relationships shine a bit more, then it would be on par with this. I loved the team and the action. It was also nice to see Shazam in the mix. I kinda like him more than Martian Manhunter who sat this one out. This is what a Justice League origin should be. Definitely needs to be watched by any DC fan. - Ms. Marvel (2022)
Kamala is the Marvel nerd in all of us. That is the one thing captured perfectly in this and the Marvel’s Avengers game. Most people hate the change to her powers, but they found a visually interesting way to differentiate her from Mister Fantastic while keeping the idea of the powers. It gave Pakistani and Indian people a Marvel hero to feel connected to. This definitely took a lot of inspiration from Tom Holland’s Spidey movies. The show didn’t stack up as well against Wandavision and Loki. I would still happily watch this series again in the future. - JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time (2014)
This is definitely not one of the mature movies that I’ve been watching. The cheesy dialogue is apparent almost immediately. I do appreciate that they use time travel in a simple way that makes sense to even the 7-13-year-old demographic. The use of a timekeeper helped elevate the stakes to be much higher than a normal villain. This was an ok outing but it would probably be best enjoyed with a younger individual since it was definitely aimed at 7-13-year-olds. Story - 18% Characters - 17% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 86% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor is back at it again in a new comedy space adventure. I didn’t know what to expect from this movie besides having that Taika flair. There were several cool moments as well as dramatic moments. This movie didn’t feel like it had much purpose. The love and thunder made sense as a monicour in both the story sense and the in-your-face cut-to-credits kind of way. It doesn’t live up to the masterpiece that is Thor Ragnarok which sits at a pretty 93%. This is a fun time but offers little in the larger scale of things outside of the post-credits scene and mini Thor. Story - 16% Characters - 17% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 87% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
There is a reason every modern Flash in media adapts this storyline. It forces Barry to come to terms with the sacrifice of losing his mother. There are major consequences in trying to change the timeline. The butterfly effect is amplified when you make time travel a time bomb. Cyborg is the least affected in the new timeline. The only change is he is a lackey for the government. Every other member was changed drastically and not really for the better. The story is great and there are so many heroes and villains sprinkled throughout. This has everything you want in a grand Superhero movie. I do wish this was credited as the Flash, rather than the Justice League. It is Barry’s movie, everyone else is just a piece of it. Love the movie and it sets the precedent for heartbreak in any Barry Allen story. - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
I think I went into this movie expecting too much. There were a lot of cool surprises, but I was expecting more from multiversal travel. You get a taste of the multiverse and see one world’s Illuminati which includes several fan favorites. I was hoping for more hopping like a Rick and Morty episode. Wanda was a villain that made sense and had a brutal ending to her goal. This movie also used a lot of horror elements and even got a little graphic at times so kids may have a nightmare or 2. This isn’t a bad movie, I was just hoping for more multiversal hopping because there are so many possibilities and this is the perfect movie to get weird with it. Story - 16% Characters - 17% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- Superman: Unbound (2013)
I’m starting to realize I don’t love movies with Brainiac as the main villain. He is a very hardcore and popular villain but something just feels not great about him. I can’t tell you what it is. But the fact Superman has to face a villain that can shrink cities definitely seems like a tall order. Supergirl is in the mix, trying to make sense of her purpose on Earth since it doesn’t quite feel like home. It has a lot of great ingredients but It wasn’t my favorite. Definitely check it out if you are a Superman/Brainiac fan. - Moon Knight (2022)
This was an interesting show to say the least. Lots of twists and turns and Oscar Isaac shows range. The Egyptian setting and lore are also a welcome touch. I don’t love this show quite like the other shows. Being so displaced from the MCU made it feel like it was not a comic book show. Storytelling wise it gave it much more range to do what it wants. I want my MCU shows to feel like MCU shows. I know this is the first show with a new hero but upcoming shows like Ms. Marvel and She-hulk feel like MCU shows. This movie was fine for what it was, but it’s not what I want from something with the Marvel Studios logo on it. This literally could have been a random show on Netflix. I may have even watched it there, but it's not what I wanted.
