  • A Man Called Otto (Limited Release 1/6/23, Wide Release 1/13/23)

First off, bring a tissue. Secondly, I was the youngest person in the theatre by at least 20 years and I'm 28 at the time of writing. Now for the actual review. This movie explored grief in a bit more of a raw way. Otto is a grumpy man who lost his wife. To him, nothing in life mattered before or after she played her part in his life. She was the only thing that mattered to him. It is a beautiful film that uses flashbacks to slowly show the backstory of Otto and his becoming who he is with his love at his side every step of the way. The characters each brought charm and felt like that oddball neighborhood that you can't help but love. While this is definitely geared towards an older audience, there were definitely moments that I connected with on a personal level. Honestly, my only gripe was the two-hour runtime felt like two hours. Definitely could have felt longer, but a story-based film is allowed to take its time and focus on the characters. Just give the film a watch. Tom Hanks never disappoints. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Megan (released 1/6/23)

I am a huge fan of A.I. and I love Blumhouse horror productions. This was a match made in heaven and I am so here for it. I literally got teary-eyed at one point and Megan's singing gave me chills at another point. There is so much to love about this movie. Megan obviously stole the show as she should. Of course, it is the classic "Self-learning A.I. goes beyond protocols and sees directives as an opportunity for murder". So basically an Ultron in a 7-year-old silicone body. Things set up early in the movie ultimately pay off. The whole theme of dealing with grief head-on rather than making something to distract you is something everyone faces at some point in their life so it is super relatable. There was the perfect balance of humor and horror which a lot of Blumhouse pictures have. I cannot overstate how amazing this movie is. This is easily among my top favorite horror movies ever. I keep bringing up Blumhouse, but they are the real heroes of the horror genre. They don't make Oscar-worthy movies, but they make genuinely fun horror movies. They inject just enough humor to be dynamic with the horror without going full campiness. This is a must-see! Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 20% Total score: 90% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Batman (1966)

This movie is a blast to watch. Definitely not the gritty Batman we have come accustomed to, but the campiness is all the charm. The cast is fantastic and very comedic. I may even watch the actual show someday in the future. Nothing about this movie makes a lick of sense and that is beautiful. Do yourself a favor and just watch it. Story - 14% Characters - 17% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 81% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • X-Men (2000)

Arguably the movie that kicked off 2 decades of Marvel movies (Sorry Blade). While not perfect, this movie had the right balance of drama and campiness to feel like a true comic book movie. It introduced a lot of iconic characters people already started to fall in love with in the animated series. While the story was only ok, this had a stellar cast and truly turned around the superhero genre (with some help from a wall-crawler). Story - 15% Characters - 15% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 13% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 75% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Superman and the Mole-men (1951)

For context, this was more of an extended pilot than a proper movie, but I wanted to see George Reeves version. This kicked off his show and I don’t hate it. It was definitely a product of the time so the camera style and effects are cheesy and dated. For what it was, I think it did an awesome job. The one thing I don’t like (it’s more of just how acting used to be) is how bland the acting is. Everyone is too stiff and proper about everything. That can be said about a lot of movies from the day. I loved the theme of people being terrified of the unknown and that fear causes that very thing to become reality. Don’t automatically fear something just because it’s unknown to you. This is definitely held back by the times, but it is still worth a watch. Story - 15% Characters - 12% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 12% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 70% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Blade (1998)

This was the first time I’ve actually watched Blade (shocker, I know). I’ve seen plenty of the fight sequences online, but this was the first time watching the whole movie and I was pleasantly surprised. The biggest scoring part was the stylish moves and choreography. The story felt solid enough to make this movie decent. Story - 14% Characters - 16% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 79% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Let's do this!!

Starting tomorrow, I will be doing regular posts about movies and how I rate them. Most of the posts will be Marvel and DC related because I have a backlog of scores and reviews ready to go. As franchise movies come out this year, I'll post reviews for their older movies leading up to the release. Every Friday, I will post a review for what I think is the biggest movie of the weekend and let you know if it is worth checking out. If there are multiple movies that garner my interest I'll post the other reviews at some point over the weekend. There are lots of great movies to look forward to like Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and even a new Evil Dead movie. I'll be there to watch and review every single one. Every Monday through Friday will have a new post!
