  • Venom 2 (2021)

This movie really only had 2 things that I enjoyed: Venom and Eddie’s relationship…and the Venom vs Carnage showdown. Those 2 things are the only thing holding this movie up. This whole movie was just Venom v Carnage with set up to fill in an hour and 10 minutes of runtime. This is a prime example of Sony banking on character popularity versus a well-thought-out story. This movie hits the mark visually, especially with Carnage. Carnage's screams when I saw this in the theatre made me genuinely terrified. Venom deserves better. The first movie wasn’t perfect but it had some semblance of character growth and a story. This was just a race to the end. It deserved better and it wasted a badass villain by killing him. Do better, Sony. Your only successful projects are ones you are less involved in i.e. Spider-verse and Tom Holland's movies. • Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)

This is the best Ghostbusters movie in the franchise up to this point. It took the magic of the original while actually giving us more character moments. There is emotion and humor and nostalgia. It does everything right. Paul Rudd is an adorable goofball. Mckenna Grace is a straight-up badass. Finn Wolfhard is…there. This is very much a movie about Mckenna’s character and her grandfather. It has a beautiful send-off for Harold Ramis who gets one last chance to be a ghostbuster as a CGI ghost. It was made to be a full-circle movie but left the door open for sequels. If future movies have the same love and passion for the franchise as this one, they will only become more beloved. If nothing else, watch the original movie and this one. It has the same villain but they each have their own style to make them unique enough to make it worthwhile to see both. • All-Star Superman (2011)

So All-Star was more of a play on words because Superman was hyperexposed to the sun. This movie felt like it was all over the place. There were multiple movies within this one movie, I guess to pad the runtime. The tech and science were really cool at least. I just wished there could have been more focus on the main thru line rather than jumping all over the place. It is a bearable watch but it moved along very slowly. It is a decent watch if you are a Superman fan and want a fairly personal story. • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

The best part of this movie is hands down the choreography. A lot of the fighting, particularly in the first half, immediately reminded me of Jackie Chan. This makes sense because one of the lead guys on Jackie’s stunt team worked on this movie. This movie had a fair bit of humor, heart, family, and addressed the desire to be something. This is definitely a life lessons kind of movie and shows how hard people will hope loved ones are still out there. I genuinely love this movie. This is a step in the right direction for the MCU in a lot of ways. • Ghostbusters (2016)

I think this movie gets more hate than it deserves. I think there are 2 things that turned people off. The female leads went against the male lead-dominated Hollywood. I think the more subtle problem is this felt like a high-budget SNL sketch. SNL in my opinion is just meh across the board. This movie has very uneven quality in humor but this very much wanted to pay homage to the franchise. It has all of the OGs in cameo roles. It brought the magic of being a ghostbuster and made it look even more badass thanks to improved effects. Chris Hemsworth was odd because he worked but didn’t at the same time. It went a little too himbo and should have kept him a jock who needs a job and not a beefy dork. I loved the finale more than anything. My boy Patrick Stump reimagining the classic theme is awesome. That being said, the OG is in this movie too which can’t be beaten. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and think it deserves more love. • Ghostbusters 2 (1989)

While I enjoy this film, I don’t love it. It does a great job of continuing the story. It does a lot of the same with the characters. The side characters are there just to be there. I finale is pretty cool. I wish I loved this more but it just feels like a downgrade for 90% of the movie. It pairs nicely with the first film but I don’t think I’d grab this one off the shelf by itself. I only see myself watching this as part of a multi-film feature. • Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010)

I love how animation gives superhero storytellers a chance to really show the destructive powers of these gods. There is a fish out of water element with Kara aka Supergirl crash landing on Earth. But this is also a superhero movie so Darkseid and his warriors are the force the good guys have to face. I love the humor sprinkled throughout but at the same time, it’s not afraid to have super serious, almost dark moments. Batman mostly broods about Kara being on Earth but he has a badass Darkseid faceoff. This is also a direct sequel to Public Enemies which I also adored. This is a great DC story. • What if...? Season 1 (2021)

This was definitely a slow-burn series. It unraveled to show how connected the anthology was. This series is definitely better as a binge-watch. Each episode got slightly better and bigger with each episode. The Party Thor episode is where what I call the 3 part finale started. It was cool to see Ultron come back as a benevolent god. There are a lot of things in this show that tie into Doctor Strange 2. I hope season 2 is crazier and brings back the Guardians of the Multiverse. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Ghostbusters (1984)

This movie is a classic. The family-fun version of ghost hunting. Danny Phantom is the only ghost-hunting project that may be better. There are so many quotable lines and characters. I mean, who doesn’t love the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man? It does drag in a few scenes but overall is a great time. The effects are actually super good for the time. I miss when blockbuster movies had originality. We need more movies that aren’t afraid to break the mold and get weird like Free Guy. I always enjoy this movie. It’s never on my top movies list but it is fun and original which is always refreshing. • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

While not quite as good as the classic, this tells a similar story with the same sarcasm and quirkiness. They included more backstories and took advantage of modern CGI. It also had the Burtonisms thrown in to really make it stand out. Other than making its own interpretation without changing the tone, it tells the classic story we all know and love. Johnny Depp was enveloped in the Wonka character. You might not even realize it’s him if no one pointed it out. I love this interpretation but I still have to give the edge to the original since it”s the classic. This is the same story with a modern, unique Burton fingerprint. Side note: If you ever read the books, this version is almost a perfect 1-to-1 except for the dentist dad backstory. • Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010)

It was so nice to see Nightwing fighting side by side with Batman. But the question remains. Who is the Red Hood? Not like the opening part of the movie was a big fat hint. This run explored Batman’s greatest failure in failing to save Jason Todd. I think it is a good character-driven story. The Red Hood goes pretty hardcore in some scenes. It is a classic story that was loosely adapted from the Arkham Knight video game. Seeing the hero fail is always so fascinating to watch. This is a good story that is worth checking out. • Black Widow (2021)

This movie felt out of place in the timeline of movies. Not because it's a prequel but because it literally felt like a phase 3 movie. This would have been better served as a movie placed either just before Infinity War or in between it and Endgame. It could have made Natasha’s death more impactful. On Vormir, Natasha seems like she has nothing to lose outside of her Avengers friends. Clint has a family and would need to be the one to stay alive. Showing Natasha’s second family would have made it a more heartbreaking scene because she would be sacrificing herself not just for Clint’s family but to ensure the survival of her newly reformed Russian family. Release timing aside, I had a couple of issues people have already mentioned. Natasha and Yelena should have died at least half a dozen times each. They are skilled fighters, not juiced-up soldiers. Also, Taskmaster was wasted. Taskmaster is a badass villain because the only way to defeat him (or in this case her) is to fight unpredictably because he copies your moves. They hinted at that but the character feels more like a secondary penultimate boss before the final boss. I have no problem with the gender swap or connection to the widows. Just make Taskmaster a villain you can bring back periodically in the ground-level movies/shows like Hawkeye, Spider-man, and Captain Falcon (yes, I’m calling him that, fight me). It's a fun spy thriller movie with incredible set pieces but it fell a bit short for me. I do love the family dynamic and hope to see Red Guardian and Yelena more.
