  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (2012)

The graphic novel that inspired Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. They both have some pretty hardcore oneliners. I just prefer how in this, the original iteration, the superhero world already feels very fleshed out and like it has seen the Justice League save the world together countless times. It gives more weight and emotion to the fight between the heroes. This does feel a bit unnecessarily long. It is a 2 and a half hour movie that doesn’t have the pacing of Across the Spiderverse to help make it easier to digest. It is still great and gives a final round to some of Batman’s biggest nemesis. It is gritty, dark, and feels like a final chapter with a bit of a more hopeful ending. Worth watching at least once in your life. • Morbius (2022)

My god, could this movie be more bland. Matt Smith and the police officer seemed to be the only ones who enjoyed being in the movie. Everyone else felt flat, ESPECIALLY Jared Leto. This would have scored worse but the pacing was at least a steady train to the end and they had cool visuals. Everything else sucked and dafudge is going on with the Vulture? Stop trying to force sinister six! They essentially did it with No Way Home. It’s done. Just make good movies rather than force a universe. • Superman V The Elite (2012)

They really went hard with the dying sense of morality theme. The idea bad guys should die for committing terrible atrocities. But Superman stands up for the idea bad people should stand trial and face proper consequences for their actions. Leave it to a British punk to want to disrupt the system. I like the conflicting views of morality and the lengths Superman goes to uphold that. This is a think piece with plenty of action to satiate that superhero punchy punch. This isn’t the best offering but this really leans into a relatable theme that is still relevant today. • Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

This movie is so surreal. There were a few things they did loosey-goosey, but they made a damn good movie. They also finally made Tom Holland feel like a bonafide Spider-man. I’m not gonna lie, the nostalgia factor was like steroids for this rating score. Seeing 3 generations of Spidermen collide is one of the coolest things ever. Into the Spider-verse did it slightly better but these are the spidermen I grew up with. The first Spider-man was the first movie I saw more than once in theatres. The Amazing Spider-man was the first movie I went to a midnight showing for (back when movies actually showed at midnight rather than 3 pm on the Thursday). Tom brought a lot of raw emotion to May’s death. They also made some of the meh characters better like Garfield’s Spiderman and Electro. It does suck Sandman and Lizard got the shaft in this one. I also would have loved Tom Hardy’s venom to be in the mix. I can go on and on about this movie but at the end of the day, I love the celebration of 20 years of Spider-man. I look forward to the new trilogy. • Justice League: Doom (2012)

My biggest issue with this movie is it implies Superman can fly so fast he can go from the Earth to the sun faster than the speed of light. He outran a solar flare that they explicitly said was going the speed of light. Anyway, the movie itself is pretty good. It utilizes the fact the Justice League each has weaknesses that can be exploited. Batman has a contingency for nearly everything. Seeing the Legion of Doom as the villain was also appropriate for this. A little vengeance for each member's hero counterpart. It is tense and has plenty of action. A welcome Justice League film addition. • Hawkeye (2021)

This show is freaking amazing. It almost gives me Die Hard vibes in a weird way but less swearing obviously. Kate is a beautiful addition to the MCU roster and I hope she and Yelena get their own show or movie. They bounce off each other so organically and I would watch that all day. This was very grounded and showed that since Hawkeye isn't a supersoldier, god, or alien that he actually gets hurt and has to recover as effectively as possible to be ready for the next fight. Clint and Kate each had a moment in the finale where they were totally dead or at least severely injured but we can let it slide. If you want something Marvel, that is more realistic, this is the show for you. I love it to death and I hope Jeremy has a couple more outings before he officially retires the bow. • Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)

The story itself is a little bit more predictable than I would have liked. It’s also funny how Po masters things in a week that take great masters decades. The characters were all great and it's a good sign of proper character development when you get emotional by a coming together of everyone for the greater good. The film has a great message about being the you that you are meant to be rather than try to be the you you are expected to be. The animation has also come a long way since the original. The colors, textures, and details are so much more improved. The villain is the most formidable one yet. It is a great time and comes full circle beautifully. • Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

I love it when sequels are done right. Now that the universe and characters have been established, it is time to dive deeper into the backstory of the main character. You also have to develop them in a way that isn’t a rehash of the first go-round. I love how it is established that Po’s teamwork with the others improved since the first movie. They flawlessly work together to utilize their strengths and negate their weaknesses. The story is awesome and the villain has a personal connection to the hero which always makes the story better. There was good use of alternate animation styles. This movie is just done really well and in many ways tops the original. Story - 19% Characters - 19% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 94% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Batman: Year One (2011)

This has everything you want in a Batman Origin. It has Batman finding his footing. Gordon starts to fight back against corruption in Gotham PD. There are lots of character moments and big development moments for both guys. I can’t really say much else than this is a freaking good Batman movie. Story - 20% Characters - 20% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 20% Total score: 95% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Eternals (2021)

This movie is not really the best. Most of the points come from the visuals and diverse characters. The Celestial protruding from the Earth looks stripped right out of the comics and has major implications. It was also kinda fun to see the Starks on screen together for the first time in a decade. This movie was giving me 2 vibes I don’t really want in an MCU movie. Firstly, this is Oscar bait-level acting. It’s good acting but it's too Shakespearean drama-heavy. Secondly, the characters are essentially Kryptonian Justice League. Literally, if the Justice League all came from Superman’s planet, this would be it…directed by Zack Snyder of course. I honestly don’t know what I would change, but this movie is just hard to watch. The long runtime also didn’t do it favors. Endgame deserved a long runtime because of the scale and story needs. This is just complex for the sake of being complex. If you are a casual fan, skip it. If you are a Marvel die-hard, keep it in the MCU line up but don’t revisit unless you are rewatching Phase 4 or the MCU as a whole. Story - 14% Characters - 18% Pacing - 12% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 12% Total score: 75% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Jack Black is always a treasure. He brings personality and relatability to any character he plays. The film had a great message that anyone can do great things as long as they believe they can. The cast is stacked so great performances all around. It told the story it wanted and never lingered. This is a solid movie that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 91% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011)

Nathan Fillion telling stories about his fellow Lanterns? Sign me up! This acts as a bit of an anthology of the main characters and how they got to be where they are. Nathan’s Hal Jordan tells the stories to a new recruit as they head to the movie's actual big bad. The genius of this movie is the focus on telling a bunch of stories that flesh out all the characters. It can drag at some parts but overall it was a fun way to explore the Lantern Corp. Story - 18% Characters - 19% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 90% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
