Barbie (released 7/21/23)
This thing was meta as hell. It felt like a weird hybrid of the type of story that Free Guy and The Lego Movie told. The whole point of the movie wasn’t to show that guys or girls should lead. It shows that we need to be individuals and not stress to conform to the double standards both genders can experience. It is definitely an oddball movie but it helped make everything pop. It told the story it needed to tell in the most Barbie way possible. There is so much attention to detail, particularly in Barbie land. It was as if all the Kens and Barbies…and Alan were genuine dolls that were being played with. Even some of the dialogue seemed like something a little girl would say as she played with them. Behind the pink and the quirkiness, there was a genuine message that is constantly needing a refresh in our lives. This movie did so many things right and deserves all the love.
